Ten Years Celebrating World Giraffe Day at Naples Zoo & South Street on June 10 Giraffles, Online Auction, and More to Help Giraffes in Africa at Longnecks for Longnecks Event Naples, Florida. May 31, 2023. Standing near a giraffe makes one feel ridiculously small. But their size is no protection from deadly wire snares or a rebel’s AK-47 as well as swaths of land that simply no longer exist for these wandering giants. In just over 30 years, we’ve lost 30% of Africa’s giraffes. The protection they need comes from numbers. Not theirs, but ours. So in 2014, Giraffe Conservation Foundation launched the first World Giraffe Day to bring global attention to the silent extinction impacting this iconic animal. A decade later, their collaborative efforts with governments have increased giraffe populations demonstrating success is possible and reinforces the urgency to act and ensure future generations of giraffes still tower over the plains. To that end, Naples Zoo is celebrating their tenth World Giraffe Day celebration on Saturday, June 10 at Naples Zoo and South Street City Oven and Grill’s Pine Ridge location. 100% of proceeds benefit giraffe in Africa. Links to an online auction and store as well as more event information is at www.napleszoo.org/giraffe. From nine to noon at Naples Zoo, staff and volunteers will share the wonders of giraffes at education stations within the historic garden and help guests find answers to giraffe themed Scavenger Hike for a chance to win a family or grandparent zoo membership. For the first time, Naples Zoo is offering online t-shirts and merch featuring two giraffes from the Zoo. And after feeding the giraffes at the Zoo, visitors are invited to feed themselves at longtime World Giraffe Day partner South Street during the Longnecks for Longnecks from 5 to 8:30 pm. For every beer sold, South Street is donating $2 per beer and even more from a special craft cocktail served in a commemorative pint glass featuring photos of the zoo’s giraffe! You can take part in “giraffles,” bid in the online auction, and purchase custom giraffe artwork and experiences including painting with a giraffe or even being a giraffe keeper for the day. Award-winning artist Muffy Clark Gill also created a large format, painted silk batik entitled “Kili Giraffe” you can bid on. In addition to general support, Naples Zoo fully funds the annual salary of Giraffe Conservation Foundation’s wildlife veterinarian and Conservation Health Coordinator Dr. Sara Ferguson to do crucial work rescuing and translocating giraffe as well as sharing best practices with other wildlife veterinarians from across Africa. 100% of tax-deductible contributions from World Giraffe Day will be dedicated to GCF’s critical to create a better future for the world’s tallest animal.
