The North Collier Fire Control & Rescue District to Offer Community Emergency Response Training to The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Community [Naples, Florida] North Collier Fire Control & Rescue District is excited to offer SW Florida’s first-ever Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training to the deaf & hard of hearing community and North Collier residents. Thanks to a grant awarded to the Fire District from Volunteer Florida, this emergency response and preparedness training is being opened up and offered to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. The training takes place over two full Saturdays. It will give attendees the confidence and basic skills to know what to do when emergency responders are unavailable in an emergency and/or disaster situation. The training is FREE and will occur at the North Collier Fire Station #45, 1885 Veterans Park Drive in Sandford Hall. Classes will be held on Saturday, June 3rd, and Saturday, June 10th, and participants must attend both classes to “graduate” and receive a certification. The now FEMA-facilitated program was developed by the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1985. North Collier Fire began its CERT program in 1999 with 12 students in the first class. Since then, North Collier Fire has trained over 1800 residents to be prepared for natural disasters or other emergencies that might impact their community. The training includes basic disaster response skills such as triage; first aid; fire safety; light search and rescue; active shooter, and more. Fully trained CERT members are expected to be able to assist others following an incident when professional responders are not immediately. The grant from Volunteer Florida covers all costs associated with the American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters. “We are excited to be able to expand our community emergency response team training to the deaf and hard of hearing community. With over 48 million Americans, including 800,000 Floridians who are deaf or hard of hearing, the National and State CERT Associations have prioritized reaching deeper into our communities to provide this invaluable training.” So stated Heather Mazurkiewicz, PIO and CERT Program Manager for the North Collier Fire District. North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District is an independent special fire district that annually responds to more than 20,000 calls for service throughout a 264-square-mile area of Collier County, Florida. The agency’s all-hazards response includes basic (BLS) and advanced life support (ALS) medical response by firefighters/EMTs and firefighters/Paramedics as well as marine, dive, and beach rescue, hazardous materials, and technical rescue. A five-member board of fire commissioners governs the District. Visit www.northcollierfire.com for more information.
