FGCU to host global Hanseatic League of Universities conference May 14-18 Conference to explore future of higher education, new ranking system FORT MYERS, Fla. (Feb. 14, 2023) – Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is hosting a comprehensive global conference that explores innovation, entrepreneurship, rankings and other preeminent topics in higher education. The third annual Hanseatic League of Universities (HLU) conference is May 14-18 at FGCU and will draw more than 200 presidents, chancellors and academic officers from leading universities around the world. “The HLU conference attracts forward-thinking academic visionaries who are sparking a dialogue about how universities can better tie into workforce and community needs,” said FGCU President Mike Martin. “Discussions at this conference will ultimately shape the future of higher education by encouraging more institutions to modernize or refresh their approach to academic instruction.” Confirmed presenters include Lynn Pasquerella, president of the American Association of Colleges & Universities; Daniel Franklin, executive editor of The Economist; and Anjelique Kidjo, Beninese American singer-songwriter, performer and activist. At the conference, HLU is releasing its new World’s Universities with Real Impact (WURI) rankings, which highlight institutions that contribute to society by creating innovative approaches to research and educational programs. “University rankings and stature should not be based on the size of an endowment, selectivity of admissions or win-loss records of a sports team,” said Michael McDonald, FGCU’s chief international officer and assistant vice president of academic affairs. “The WURI rankings are based on factors that truly matter to a university – preparing graduates for the future and fulfilling responsibilities to the community.” The WURI rankings evaluate universities in six categories: Industrial application rather than traditional ways of counting research papers and lecture-type teaching. Value-creating startups and entrepreneurship rather than a traditional focus on the number of jobs filled. Social responsibility, ethics and integrity rather than focusing on knowledge and skills for material success. Student mobility and openness for collaboration between schools and across national borders rather than an independent, closed system. Crisis management amid climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other global and local crises. Progress during the Fourth Industrial Revolution through digital technology, artificial intelligence, big data, cloud services, blockchain and other developments. Participants will have opportunities to tour FGCU’s 800-acre campus as well as nearby businesses and organizations. The conference also includes a performance from Angelique Kidjo. Registration is available online at hlu.fgcu.edu. Tickets are $700 and include all conference workshops and panel discussions, a campus tour, meals, musical performances and site visits to local businesses and organizations.
