Avow Hospice receives a $20,000 grant from the Collier Community Foundation to support grief and bereavement programming NAPLES, Fla. (Nov. 28, 2022) – Avow received a $20,000 grant from the Collier Community Foundation to support grief and bereavement programming for people of all ages, supporting events like the Center for Grief Support’s annual Thanksgiving. The event provided a holiday meal for about 60 bereavement program participants, many spending their first holiday without their loved ones. At the event, grief counselors created a family-like atmosphere in Avow’s Ispiri Center, where participants enjoyed a holiday inspired meal and shared stories about their loved ones. The grant helps fund salary and benefits for staff who provide different types of counseling sessions (group and one-on-one). Avow’s bereavement programs are open to all residents and visitors in Southwest Florida without cost. “The support we are able to offer to people who are struggling with loss is fully funded by the support of organizations like the Community Foundation,” said Avow’s Chief Philanthropy Officer Annalise Smith. “Since 1983, the goal of our team is to provide understanding and acceptance for community members who need it.” In 2021, Avow served 930 individual virtual and in-person adult sessions, 7,408 phone check-ins to those grieving, 865 bereavement support groups, 4,385 bereavement group participants and 1,469 unique individuals served. Children served in 2021 included 373 child/teen participants, 279 support group sessions and 51 children’s camps or events. Support sessions for adults are available online and/or in-person at the Center for Grief Support on the Avow campus. Monthly memorials are held virtually for remembrance. Groups are available utilizing motivational interviewing, an evidence-based practice, to ensure that each group module meets the individualized needs of each participant. Current group titles include Raising Awareness About Grief, Understanding Grief, Working Through Grief and Taking Action with Grief. All bereavement participants may attend the Bereavement Event Planning Committee (BEPC), which plans, educates and hosts monthly community events. Avow also offers groups focused on the needs of caregivers, self-care such as spiritual health, chair yoga and other support groups fostering well-being and overall emotional health improvement. The Avow Kids program, designed for children ages 5-17, provides support and companionship to children who are grieving whether it is the loss of a parent, sibling, friend, or relative through illness, accident, deportation, military deployment, and traumatic deaths. Additionally, Avow helps children process and heal from other types of loss, including divorce, the loss of a friend, instability in the foster care system, and deployed parents and family members.
