STARability Foundation will partner with The Local during national Down Syndrome Awareness Month NAPLES, Fla. (Sept. 21, 2022) – STARability Foundation is excited to announce a joint fundraiser with The Local during October in honor of national Down Syndrome Awareness Month. To raise awareness and support STARability’s mission, The Local will donate $1 from weekday lunch meals purchased between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. throughout the entire month. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the STARability Foundation to raise awareness for Down syndrome month,” said Jeff Mitchell, owner and executive chef of The Local. “It is a cause that is near and dear to my heart both personally and professionally. We truly believe their work makes a significant impact on our local community and are proud to support such a great cause.” October was first designated as Down Syndrome Awareness Month in the 1980s and serves as a way to celebrate the abilities and accomplishments of individuals with Down syndrome, raise public awareness about the condition, and advocate for acceptance and inclusion. Down syndrome occurs across the human spectrum and is one of the most common types of intellectual disabilities, with about 6,000 babies being born with the condition each year. “Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are often faced with stereotypes and myths, but our STARs continue to show time and again that these conditions do not define them or limit their abilities,” said Karen Govern, CEO of STARability Foundation. “We appreciate The Local joining us in our endeavors to raise awareness and spread messages of acceptance, inclusion and respect.” STARability is a regional leader in providing innovative, results-driven programs designed to accommodate the unique needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Southwest Florida. Their life-transforming work ensures families have access to programs, resources and an inclusive community that provide opportunities to lead a meaningful and productive life.
