Freedom Park Stormwater Management System Maintenance Project Scheduled The Freedom Park Stormwater Management System Maintenance Project planned to remove nuisance and exotic vegetation from the stormwater treatment ponds and managed areas within the Fred W. Coyle Freedom Park (location shown in diagram at the end of this release) is scheduled to begin in early July. The approximate $67,000 project will remove invasive trees (some as tall as 15-feet), shrubs, and vines over the next 4-to-6 weeks, weather permitting. This water quality treatment park, constructed in 2009, helps reduce harmful pollutants entering Naples Bay and ease flooding concerns in surrounding areas. Much like farming depends on the soil and rain for nutrients, the plants in this artificial wetlands deplete run-off and sediment of nutrients before they can contaminate and unbalance our native ecosystem. Harvesting is an integral part of the process that promotes new growth and optimal nutrient uptake. With periodic removal of the nuisance and exotic vegetation, along with selective replanting, the system will work more effectively. Fred W. Coyle Freedom Park, 1515 Golden Gate Parkway, Naples, FL 34105 is an approximately 50-acre natural water quality treatment facility, which provides flooding relief and tertiary treatment of stormwater runoff from the approximately 4,500-acre Gordon River Extension Basin. Through the interconnected system of multi-depth ponds, polishing marshes, and wetlands, the man-made park functions as a natural filtration system similar to the Everglades. The park combines wetlands, habitats, trails, boardwalks, observation gazebos, an education building and extensive indigenous landscape within a passive park setting that will intrigue and educate nature enthusiasts of all ages. Freedom Park is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk. Some trails will need to be closed during the maintenance project. Signs will be posted.
