The Greater Naples YMCA is hosting a lifeguard certification class on Friday, June 19 through Sunday, June 21. Jeremiah Villasante, the YMCA Aquatics Director, will be the course’s supervising instructor. Lifeguards are especially needed in Collier County during the summer. Accidental drowning is the leading cause of death among infants and small children in Florida. With the school year now coming to a close, and summer right around the corner, kids are ready to hit the pools this summer. “Drowning is always a concern for parents, especially during the summer.” says Jeremiah Villasante. “These lifeguard trainings are essential to our community. Safety is always our top priority, and equipping guards with the proper training can help save lives.” The class will be open to all in our community. The minimum age requirement is 16-years-old. Lifeguard, CPR and first aid certifications will be available to those who attend and complete the course. Requirements to take the class include being able to swim 300 yards, tread water for two minutes and being able to dive 10 feet into a swimming pool to retrieve a 10 pound object. The class is held at the Greater Naples YMCA, 5450 YMCA Road, Naples, FL 31409. Hours are Friday, June 19 from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Saturday, June 20 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Sunday, June 21 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The cost for the class is $200.00. Those interested can register in person at the Greater Naples YMCA, or online at www.greaternaplesymca.org/lifeguard-training.html.
