Bonita Bay Club will host the second annual FineMark Women’s Pro Tennis Championship, the only $100,000 Women’s U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit Tournament in Florida, from May 11-17, 2020. Along with prize money, players from the top 125 in the world will also vie for WTA points in singles and doubles play and the singles winner is part of a group of players that could receive a wild card entry to the next French Open. The tournament, a singles main draw of 32 and also a 32-player qualifier and 16-team doubles field, has proven to be a forum to see rising stars. Lauren Davis, winner of last May’s inaugural edition at Bonita Bay Club, reached the second and third rounds, respectively, at the 2019 French Open and Wimbledon. After playing at last May’s event at the club, Cori “Coco” Gauff caused a sensation by reaching the round of 16 at last summer’s Wimbledon at age 15. She then became the youngest player in the professional era to dethrone a defending champion of the Australian Open when she defeated Naomi Osaka in the third round of the tournament last month. Taylor Townsend, who beat the reigning Wimbledon champion Simona Halep to reach the third round of the 2019 U.S. Open; and 2017 women’s U.S. Open winner and finalist Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys, respectively, all played on the USTA Pro Circuit earlier in their careers. “It was a fulfillment of a dream of ours to be honored to host the first one; we want to make the next one even better — for our members and the public — and help increase the popularity of tennis in Southwest Florida even more,” said Paula Scheb, USPTA Master Professional and director of sports at Bonita Bay Club. “The efforts of more than 300 club members in volunteering in all aspects of the event including being hosts, ball runners, the support of sponsors and more will help make all of this happen.” Proceeds from the event will go towards Bonita Bay Club’s goal of purchasing a pediatric ambulance for Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The event will be the third major tennis event of the season to be held at the club following the FineMark FGCU Collegiate Open and the 39th annual Naples-Fort Myers Challenge, both held in November.
