FORT MYERS, Fla. – August 23, 2017- One of the best investment we can make in the life of a child is in their early education experiences. Research supports this and shows that when we pay attention to those early years, it has a direct link to their success later in life. One way you can help enrich a young learner is through the Early Learning Coalition’s (ELC) Literacy Buddy Program. The program links adult volunteers with 3, 4 or 5 year old children at preschools. The goal: to exchange letters and to provide a child with a book of their very own, catered to their interests. “The Literacy Buddy Program is a great way for individuals or groups to connect with preschools in the community and to get involved in early learning activities”, says Mary Villa, the ELC’s Early Literacy Advisor. “Volunteers are the backbone of this program. They provide what is often a child’s first book, and instill a love of reading that may last a lifetime.” A Literacy Buddy volunteer must agree to receive letters from a child, and provide a good-quality book for that child three times during the school year. Yes! You may have more than one little Literacy Buddy. For more information or to sign up to become a volunteer, visit www.ELCofSWFL.org and tap the Big Buddy Button.
