In an ongoing initiative to enhance and update infrastructure at Collier County’s airports, the Collier County Airport Authority recently commissioned a new, state-of-the-art Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) at the Immokalee Regional Airport (IMM). An AWOS is a computerized system that automatically measures numerous parameters (such as wind speed/direction, visibility, sky condition, barometric pressure, density altitude, precipitation, temperature, lightning, and dew point), analyzes the data, prepares a weather observation voice message, and broadcasts the information to airport users. The new system replaces an obsolete model with limited functionality. Recognizing that IMM plays a vital role in the statewide general aviation network, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) awarded Collier County with a grant of $104,000 to purchase and install the new system. After a formal procurement process, Wolen, LLC was selected by the Collier County Airport Authority to install the ultramodern AWOS IIIPT/HU, manufactured by All Weather, Inc. As a result of Wolen’s commitment to providing superior service, the new AWOS was officially commissioned by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Jan. 11, 2017. Paul Wolownik, Principal of Wolen, LLC stated that “Wolen was very happy to have assisted Collier County with the installation of their new AWOS at the Immokalee Regional Airport. The support of airport management was instrumental in reducing construction time, which also led to a problem-free commissioning by the FAA.” The AWOS also employs a secure data connection to generate and provide meteorological aviation reports to the National Weather Service (NWS), local weather reporting stations, and other internet or “app-based” weather sources. “Serving as the official weather reporting station for the Immokalee Airport and surrounding community, this new system will aim to enhance safety for airport users and make available critical weather data for national reporting agencies and local residents alike,” stated Justin Lobb, manager of the Collier County Airport Authority. The Immokalee Regional Airport, situated on 1300 acres in close proximity to the communities of Immokalee and Ave Maria, offers aeronautical and industrial services to the general public, and is home to aerial crop spraying/fire fighting operators, aircraft maintenance service and the Immokalee Regional Raceway.
