Event Description:
When the inaugural ended on March 4, 1861, the incoming Lincoln administration’s first crisis was how to deal with a rapidly deteriorating military situation at two U.S. Army-occupied forts in the seceded states of South Carolina and Florida. Should one or both be surrendered or held? Lincoln’s course of action regarding these two forts would determine the future of the United States of America.
